Beck is child enough, but welcome to the first of what will no doubt be the many children of Beck (the 90's version of the New Dylan). McGee is a precocious 14-year-old acoustic guitar player with all the untuned sincerity and folk blues attitude of Beck before he donned dancing shoes with the Dust Brothers. McGee plays most everything, from drums and bass to mandolin and harmonica. His lyrics are more narrative and less experimental than Beck.
When Mary arose is a ghost story; Lonely Town is about, well, a lonely town - but he has the gift for striking imagery; The World is Hollow and 3 Door Car are two clever songs. Mark Bell at Sun Studio is thanked in the liner notes (for studio time, I'm told) and Memphian Robbie Turner plays his sweetly singing steel on several tracks. Lots of promise. Watch out when McGee turns of drinking age.
